Mayor Darrin Canniff and Chatham-Kent Council colleagues praised former council member Bryon Fluker, who died on Wednesday.
“When you speak about political leaders in Tilbury Bryon’s name is front and centre,” said Mayor Canniff, in a media release.
“His years of service and dedication to his community are unmatched.”
First elected to Tilbury Town Council in 1972, Fluker later spent eight years as mayor of that community.
He was elected to the inaugural Chatham-Kent Council in 1998 and served until 2018.
“Bryon had the unique ability to make even a boring meeting entertaining,” said Joe Faas, a former Mayor of Dresden and Chatham-Kent Councillor since 2003, in a media release.
“We had a shared background in that we were both mayors before amalgamation. We didn’t agree on every issue but there was respect for each other when we differed.”
Councillor Doug Sulman who served two decades with Fluker described him as “just a bundle of energy. He would dash into a room; his comments were laced with humour, but you knew that he’d done his homework. He was well-respected by fellow councillors and obviously by his community considering his length of service.”
“He was a great mentor to me, and the Tilbury area owes him a debt of gratitude,” said current West Kent Councillor Mark Authier who served with Fluker in his last term.
“My condolences to his family.”
Fluker’s funeral will be held today.
