Update: Severe thunderstorm warning ends, watch continues in Chatham-Kent

Environment Canada ended the severe thunderstorm warning in Chatham-Kent at 12:25 p.m. The severe thunderstorm watch remains in place. Here are the details:

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.

Hazards:
Nickel to ping pong ball size hail.
Wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h.

Timing:
Through this afternoon.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning in Chatham-Kent at 11:42 a.m.

At 11:42 a.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts and pea to dime size hail.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Corunna to Windsor, moving east at 85 km/h.

Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts and pea to dime size hail.

Locations impacted include:
Tecumseh, Belle River, Lakeshore, Wallaceburg, Oil Springs, Stoney Point, Comber, Walpole Island, Port Lambton, Sombra, Courtright, Lighthouse Cove, Corunna, Mitchell’s Bay, Wilkesport, Becher, Grande Pointe, Brigden, Dresden and Bentpath.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Discussion:
Thunderstorms incoming from Lower Michigan will present mainly a large hail threat, with damaging winds becoming an increasing hazard through the morning. There is uncertainty with respect to further thunderstorm development this afternoon.
