The stench of selfishness

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Back in the dog days of July this year I read about an incident that happened at Disneyworld’s Magic Kingdom that really caught my attention – for all the wrong reasons!

So, apparently, there were these two groups standing in line to go into Mickey’s PhilharMagic Concert when one member of one of the families left their place in line to go and retrieve their cell phone.

When she returned members of the other family refused her entry back into the line, physically pushing her back.

A fight ensued before park officials were able to break up the scuffle.

Three people were subsequently arrested for misdemeanor battery, and another had to go to the hospital to be treated for a large cut on his chin.

As I watched the footage from someone who caught all the action on their cell phone, it definitely appeared to me that this was a case of selfishness gone bad.

Why is it that we must cast aside an opportunity to show courtesy in order to get my own way?

I wonder if whoever it was that was at the forefront of refusing this woman back into line would think differently if the shoe had been on the other foot?

Jesus had a simple solution for how to handle these types of scenarios, which is recorded for us in Matthew 7:12: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you…”

Personally, I can think of many times where somebody cut me some slack and did me a favour.

Am I as quick to do the same?

I think we can all learn from this Disney disaster, and we won’t need to cut the line to do so, either!
