National Truth and Reconciliation Week flag raising held

Yesterday the Municipality of Chatham-Kent recognized National Truth & Reconciliation Week with a flag raising at the Civic Centre in Chatham.

Known as the ‘Survivors’ Flag, this orange and white flag is an expression of remembrance, meant to honour residential school survivors and all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada.

Each element depicted on the flag was carefully selected by survivors from across Canada.

A variety of municipal departments, as well as Councillors, Anthony Ceccacci, Marjorie Crew, Karen Kirkwood-Whyte, Mary Clare Latimer and Brock McGregor joined Mayor Darrin Canniff and CAO Michael Duben in honouring the survivors and marking this week of remembrance.

Faith Hale, Executive Director of Ska:na Family Learning Centre, who spoke at the flag-raising said, “Chatham-Kent’s population is made up of 4% Indigenous people, a high percentage compared to other cities. This is a time to come together, celebrate wellness and educate as a community.”
