Capping continues in Wheatley, odour investigation comes up clear

Final work on APEC 1 continued on Wednesday as contractors complete cutting the well and capping.

Testing will continue with clean-up and restoration of the work area later this week.

In the meantime, residents are reminded that if at any time you detect the smell of gas, to immediately call 9-1-1.

Earlier this week, Chatham-Kent fire officials conducted an odour investigation in Wheatley.

Fire officials say Station #20 Wheatley responded to the area of 108 Talbot East Wheatley for the investigation.

Crews used gas detection devices to monitor the air and no gas was detected.

“They did the right thing. Smelled gas, evacuated and called 911,” stated Assistant Chief Ken Labonte, on a media release.

“None of the gas detectors went off and there is nothing to indicate that wells are leaking or to raise concerns.”

CK fire will continue to monitor the area.
