The Lambton Kent District School Board’s Personal Support Worker (PSW) Program, which runs at Wallaceburg District Secondary School (WDSS) and Sarnia’s Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School (AMSS)m has been awarded the three-year CESBA Quality Assurance Certificate, the highest level a program can achieve.
WDSS officials say the goal of the quality assurance process is to provide a system of quality assurance for Ontario school board PSW programs that meets current industry standards and requirements from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
It ensures that those participating in these programs and the public are assured of excellence in PSW training, school officials added.
“The Lambton Kent District School Board PSW Program started in 2007 and each year graduates obtain immediate employment in areas such as long-term care homes, community-based agencies/home care and, in more recent years, local hospitals,” said Lisa Zandbergen, who teaches the PSW program at WDSS.
“Community partners help provide practical experiences for students through clinical placements, and many of these placements lead to jobs.”
Zandbergen added: “Students can apply to the program from any school within the Lambton Kent District School Board and will earn seven credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. High school graduates are also eligible to apply to the program if they are under the age of 21. Interested applicants can apply directly through the school of interest.”
