You can’t cover up a bad smell

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

A number of years ago my mom had a persistent and malodourous problem at her home.

Somehow a skunk had found its way through an opening under her porch and had taken up residence under her house.

Day after day the distinct, unpleasant odour of skunk spray permeated the air.

An exterminator laid a baited trap adjacent to the place where the skunk had gained access in hopes of luring it out.

However, in the end, the trap did not work, even though it had tasty morsels to tempt the unwanted intruder.

What did work was a friend of my mom’s who managed to work at closing up the small, hard-to-find opening where the skunk was gaining an entrance.

We sometimes treat sin the way we approach that skunk. We use cover ups and flimsy remedies that don’t work.

No, the stench of sin remains! Ecclesiastes 10:1 says, “As dead flies give perfume a bad smell, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honour.”

My mom has a nice, comfortable home, but during the skunk invasion it was the last place she wanted to be.

Folks, you cannot cover up sin.

A little sin can stink up your whole life.

Just as mint gum won’t hide garlic breath, so anything less than Christ’s forgiveness won’t deal with sin.

If you’re dealing with something in your life right now that is causing a problem, don’t try to cover it up.

Bring it to the Lord and have Him take care of it for you!
