What’s Happening at the WAAC this week:

FITNESS

Yoga

Zoom Yoga with Annie is back with a new day and time! Due to a change in Annie’s availability, Yoga will now be held Thursday mornings at 9am. Come enjoy a great yoga workout at the WAAC. As with all fitness programs, pre-registration is required.

Line Dancing

Line Dancing starts next week! New Day, New Time, New Instructor!  Karen has taken the time to work with Victoria so the level of instruction will still be top notch!  In order to offer classes at other times of the day, Line Dancing will now be Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30pm. As with all fitness programs, pre-registration is required. Non-members are welcome to register for classes as well.

Fit & Chair Fit Canceled This Week

Most regular participants are already aware that Dana will be away this week. We are sharing in this update in case any non-regulars were considering attending either Fit or Chair Fit tomorrow. Classes are expected to resume at their regular day and time next week.

February Classes

Registration is now open for February classes. Reminder that due to limited space, preregistration and prepayment is required to guarantee your spot. Should you try to “drop in” on a class, we may not be able to accommodate you due to space and safety limitations.

Instructors

We are hoping to expand our fitness program offerings but are having trouble finding qualified instructors for a variety of programs, (Tai Chi, Pilates, Yoga, etc.). If you know of anyone who may be interested in teaching a fitness class at the WAAC, please consider letting them know that we are interested, or letting us know and we will reach out to them!

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

Footcare

Denise Kenny, Footcare Nurse will be in on Thursday, Jan 26. Spots are limited, so appointments are required. If you would like to book an appointment, please call/email the Centre.

Book Club

Our Monthly Book Club is meeting this Thursday evening at 6:30pm. The book choice for this month is The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve. Next month’s book, The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas, will be available for pick up at the meeting, or during regular office hours for any new participants starting Friday morning.

Ukulele

We are about to conclude our 5-week Learn to Play Ukulele session. We are now trying to determine if there is enough demand to continue this program. Please let us know if you are interested in either:

  1. Learn to Play Ukulele Sessions
  2. Weekly Ukulele Jam Sessions – drop in jam sessions for players with a little bit of experience (don’t worry, you don’t need a ton of experience to jam!)

Birthday Luncheon

This month’s birthday luncheon is this Friday, January 27th, starting at 11:45 (meal served at noon). Join us in celebrating members who have celebrated their birthdays in November, December and January! The cost is $8 for members and $10 for non-members. The meal will consist of choice of soup, sandwiches, coffee, tea, cake and ice cream. Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, January 25 at 1pm, If we do not reach the minimum number, we will need to cancel the luncheon.

Our birthday luncheons have struggled to get off the ground post-COVID. The next few months will determine if we are able to continue offering the Birthday Luncheons, so if this is a program you are interested in, please consider signing up. You do not have to be celebrating your birthday to join our luncheon!

OTHER

Caution Upstairs

A critter has managed to chew a hole in our roof, leading to a leak upstairs in the main lobby area right near the door to the stairs. There is currently a bucket and warning sign in place. The municipality will be repairing the damage as soon as possible, but in the meantime, please exercise caution when upstairs.

Janitor

The WAAC is exploring the possibility of employing a janitor/custodian/cleaner in house rather than using an external company. The position would require 2-3 hours per day, 2-3 days per week (total of 6-9 hours). Availability must be for when the Centre does not have scheduled activities, but is otherwise flexible. If you think you may be interested in this position, please contact the office for more information.

Weather

The weather in the middle of the week may require us to close the Centre, or the office if I cannot make it safely from Chatham. Should that be the case, we will send out an email to members as soon as possible as well as posting the closure on our Facebook page. If we need to cancel Footcare, we will contact each person directly to reschedule. Fingers crossed that this proves unnecessary, but it is always better to be prepared!

Office Closed

The office will be closed tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday, January 24, starting at noon due to a meeting at the Civic Centre in Chatham.

The office will also be closed Friday afternoon to enable the Administrative Coordinator and a member of the Board to conduct interviews for the Program Assistant position.

Programming will run as scheduled both days (except Chair Fit, which has already been canceled for other reasons), but the Crafternoon activity on Friday will not be candle-making. Crafternoon participants can choose to do diamond painting, card making, or bring their own crafts from home to work on at the Centre. Candle-making will be rescheduled for a later date.
