Janine Day named 2023 OCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year

Lambton Women’s Basketball Head Coach Janine Day was named the 2023 OCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year at the OCAA Championship Awards Banquet on last week in Welland, ahead of the 2023 OCAA Women’s Basketball Championship at Niagara College.

Day, who is a long-time basketball coach at Wallaceburg District Secondary School, was also named the OCAA West Division Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

As the OCAA Coach of the Year, Day will be the league’s nomination for the CCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year Award, which will be presented at the CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship Awards Banquet on March 14, 2023.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled for Janine on her OCAA Coach of the Year award,” said Tyler Bennett, Sports Information and Marketing Coordinator for the Lions, in a media release.

“Her commitment to excellence both on and off the court has set a high standard for the Women’s Basketball Program, and this award is a reflection of her tireless efforts year-round.”

In just her second season as Head Coach of the Lions, Day has helped to establish the Lions among the top women’s basketball programs, not only in the OCAA but across the CCAA.

The Lions finished second in the always-competitive OCAA West Division during the 2022-23 regular season, posting a 13-3 record.

Including exhibition play and the post-season thus far, the Lions have posted an overall record of 20-4 this season.

On November 11, the Lions made their debut in the CCAA Women’s Basketball National Rankings, checking in at number nine.

Day and the Lions would reach as high as eighth in the country (November 15) and would be nationally ranked in 12 of the 15 weeks during the regular season.

Day and the Lions took part in the OCAA Women’s Basketball Championship over the weekend.

The Lions dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Humber in the OCAA Championship Game, 66-62, to capture the silver medal.
