Theatre Kent captures awards at the Western Ontario Drama League Festival and Awards Gala

The cast of a recent theatre production in Chatham-Kent is in the spotlight following the annual Western Ontario Drama League (WODL) Festival and Awards Gala.

In February, 2023, Theatre Kent mounted a production of Remember, Maggy? written by Sarnia mother/son duo Carol Anne and Matt Murray, and directed by Wallaceburg resident Dan White.

The show focused on four women: two sisters, their mother, and a family friend as they tackled issues around dementia, love, and loss.

At the WODL awards, held in London on Saturday, the Maggy cast, comprised of Lisa Franks, Robyn Brady, JC Wright, and Gina Paradis, was recognized with the award for Outstanding Ensemble.

JC Wright, who portrayed Irene Farmer in the show, was also honoured with the award for Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role.

As well, two long-time Theatre Kent members, Gina and Andre Paradis, were honoured by the WODL with Life Member Awards for their continued contributions to community theatre in the region.

“Theatre Kent is proud of the outstanding efforts the Remember, Maggy? team has been recognized for at the 2023 WODL Festival awards,” Theatre Kent Board Chair Tony Erdelyi said, in a media release.

“The Life Member Awards presented to Andre and Gina Paradis are well deserved by the pair, whose commitment to theatre in Chatham-Kent and beyond has been immeasurable.”

“These four women put their heart and soul into bringing Matt and Carol Murray’s characters to life and infusing them with passion and a tangible love for one another,” Director Dan White said.

“Congratulations on being recognized for excellence in your work. Bravo!”

The WODL was established in 1932 and has grown to include 28 member theatre groups from across Western Ontario covering Windsor to Burlington and north to Tobermory.

The 2022-23 Festival included 19 productions.
