Volunteers ‘pumped’ for Fergie Jenkins statue unveiling

The big day is coming up in less than two weeks and volunteers for the Fergie Jenkins Statue Dedication are pumped up.

“It is really very moving,” said Kelly Jenkins, executive committee member, in a media release.

“There are so many people working so hard, to be sure the day is an overwhelming success.”

On June 10 at 1:45 p.m, a replica of the Fergie Jenkins statue that was unveiled in Wrigley Park last year, will be unveiled in Chatham-Kent in front of the Civic Centre.

Jenkins played professional baseball from 1965-1983, during that time he was the first Canadian to win the Cy Young award.

A premiere pitcher of his era, Jenkins was a National League All-Star for three seasons, and finished his career with a record 284 game wins and 3,192 strikeouts.

“The big day is coming and we have some amazing activities planned for the after party,” said Jason King, Executive Committee member, in a media release.

“Along with 300 Chicago Cubs Baseballs being given out to the first 300 kids, there is the First Ontario Family Fun Zone, the Tek Savvy VIP area, and the First Choice DKI entertainment area. We are striving to put on a party worthy of Chatham-Kent’s favourite son, Fergie Jenkins.”

In total about 75 volunteers have donated their expertise, time and funding toward the event.

The Statue Dedication Ceremony will begin at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in front of the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre, located at 315 King Street West in Chatham.

This event is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.

A family-friendly after party will be held at Sons of Kent Brewing Co. located at 27 Adelaide Street South in Chatham.
