The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority issued a watershed conditions statement and flood outlook on Saturday, July 15, 2023.
SCRCA officials say water levels across the watershed have peaked, 10 to 20 mm of rain is forecast this weekend, water levels will react more quickly with increased runoff and saturated soils, ponding and flooding is being experienced in floodplain areas.
“Water levels across the watershed remain high and into natural floodplain areas after receiving upwards of 80 mm of rain last week,” SCRCA officials say.
“Forecasts are calling for variable amounts of rain over the weekend, with 10-20 mm possible today, followed by an additional 10-30 mm early next week.”
SCRCA officials added: “Water levels across the watershed have now peaked and are beginning to recede. As the region begins to receive more rainfall, saturated soils from last week’s rain will contribute to increased runoff into watercourses. Water levels will respond more quickly to the rain under these saturated conditions and are likely to elevate to levels similar to those this past weekend, should the higher forecasts materialize.”
River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion, SCRCA officials added.
“Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water,” officials say.
“Children and pets should be kept away from the water. The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.”
This statement will remain in effect until Sunday, July 16, 2023 unless otherwise updated, SCRCA officials added.
