Motivation to not quit

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Often, when we want to make changes in our lives, we start out with a lot of gusto and excitement, especially if we see some results in the short term.

However, if we hit a plateau, the temptation to quit is strong.

This is what happens to most people with their New Year’s resolutions.

I am a person who runs daily for exercise and general wellbeing, and I have been doing this for many years.

Nevertheless, there have been times when I was prepping for a big race that the goal just seemed too far.

That’s when I would consider these wise words that someone once wrote: “If I quit now, I will soon be back to where I started. And when I started, I was desperately wishing to be where I am right now.”

Staying the course and keeping our eye on our goal is hard work and quitting sometimes seems like such a nice, easy alternative to grinding things out.

I hit a low point during my second year of university many years ago and I wanted to just quit and walk away from it all in the worst way.

However, a friend’s dad, who was a pastor, gave me some good counsel to encourage me to continue.

That, along with the fact that I had worked hard and saved to pay for my own tuition and all other costs, rallied me to stay the course.

It was not until near the end of my third and final year that I realized I needed this degree in order to enroll in seminary to become a pastor.

Maybe you know someone who is struggling with pressing on with their goal and could use a little boost to keep going.

Why not write down that quote I mentioned earlier and give it to them in a nice card?

Here it is again: “If I quit now, I will soon be back where I started. And when I started, I was desperately wishing to be where I am right now.”
