‘Shifting Gears’ tractor parade set for August 12 in support of Three Oaks Respite Cabin

Special to the Sydenham Current

The Bergsma family didn’t realize how many farmers and first responders were struggling until they lost their son and brother Dalles to completed suicide.

In response to this incredible loss, they are building the Three Oaks Respite Cabin, a retreat space for farmers and first responders to find refuge and support in the midst of their stress and anxiety.

As the project nears completion, the family is preparing to host their next fundraiser August 12.

The Shifting Gears Fundraiser Tractor Parade will begin at 887 Shetland Rd. Florence, and end at the Florence Community Centre, 6213 Mill St. Florence, Ontario.

The parade will showcase local farmers and first responders and create awareness of the challenges they face.

Spectators are encouraged to show their support and enjoy the parade along Shetland Road and Lambton Line.

The money raised through the Shifting Gears Tractor Parade will support ongoing programming for guests of Three Oaks Respite Cabin, which is slated to open in November, both during and after their stay.

The programs will be designed and led by registered therapists who understand the psychological difficulties faced by farmers and first responders.

Registration is by donation and there is no cost for spectators.

The family hopes to raise $50,000 for mental health programming with this fundraiser.
