Storm rips through Chatham-Kent, many people remain without power

A storm, which prompted a tornado warning from Environment Canada, ripped through parts of Chatham-Kent on Thursday night, early Friday morning.

“During the storm, officers were kept occupied throughout the night, addressing various concerns arising from the strong winds and heavy rainfall,” Chatham-Kent Police Service officials said in a media release on Friday morning, August 25, 2023.

“Specifically, they responded to 11 alarm-related incidents, conducted 22 property checks, addressed 20 incidents involving traffic hazards and managed 39 incidents of downed wires. Additionally, a single collision was reported in which a falling tree struck a vehicle.”

Power outages are still impacting parts of Chatham, Erieau and Tilbury.

“The storm last night has damaged many trees which have fallen onto our power lines,” Entegrus officials said on social media on Friday morning.

“We have all hands on deck and have called in additional resources to help. We will provide more updates once we have an inventory of all incidents. Thank you for your patience.”

At 9:30 a.m, Entegrus officials said 8,934 customers in Chatham, 146 customers in Erieau and 106 customers in Tilbury remain without power.

A flood watch remains in place by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority and the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority.
