The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) have confirmed two downbursts occurred in Chatham-Kent during storms last week, one near Dresden and the other in Chatham.
An NTP investigation confirmed an EF0 downburst at Bentpath, near Dresden, resulting from storms on August 23, 2023.
“Barns were damaged and trees were snapped over a wide area,” NTP officials say.
The start time was 6:30 p.m. and the estimated maximum wind speed was 125 km/h, NTP officials added.

An NTP investigation concluded that an EF0 downburst hit the northeast side of Chatham on August 24, 2023.
“Numerous trees were uprooted and snapped and had large branches broken,” NTP officials say.
“There was light roof damage (missing shingles) to several homes.”
The estimated maximum wind speed was 125 km/h, NTP officials added.

The Northern Tornadoes Project, founded at Western University in 2017 with the support of social impact fund ImpactWX, aims to better detect tornado occurrence throughout Canada, improve severe and extreme weather understanding and prediction, mitigate against harm to people and property, and investigate future implications due to climate change.
