Sharpening our focus

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Financial author, Nathan W. Morris, makes good sense when he says, “It’s not always that we need to do more but rather that we need to focus on less.”

I don’t know about you, but that is a piece of advice I desperately need to take!

My life, it seems, is an endless parade of choices that all scream for my attention and make a wild claim on being necessary.

However, I have found two things that really help me in this area.

One is pre-planning my schedule.

Proverbs 24:27 says, “Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.”

This verse is often applied to couples just starting out on their marriage journey, and with good reason, but the principle works in general when it comes to preparation.

Priorities need to be set in order to maintain your focus on what’s most important and often time sensitive.

Human nature sometimes causes us to procrastinate on the bigger, important tasks because we know the work involved in completing them.

That’s not a very sound practice.

The second thing that helps me is found in Proverbs 15:22: “Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisors bring success.”

In addition to good books out there that give advice on this subject, there are also people in our lives, mentors and others who have gone before us and have experience in the world of trying to stay focused.

That list could include our parents, former teachers, and other community leaders whom we respect.

Pick some brains and find out what worked for them.

I have done this countless numbers of times and it has helped me along the way, even if I still struggle to stay on track.

We can’t do everything, my friend, but we can do some things better.
