Officer threatened with a steel pipe, suspect tasered in Chatham

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: At 4:02 p.m., police responded to Queen Street in Chatham to conduct a well-being check as screams were heard from an apartment.

When the police arrived at the scene, they met a man who was highly intoxicated and behaving aggressively.

The officers tried to ensure his safety, but he grabbed a steel pipe and held it in a threatening manner towards them.

Despite repeated requests to drop the pipe, the man refused to comply.

To safely apprehend him, the officers used a conducted energy weapon.

Neither the man nor the officers were injured, and the man was successfully taken into custody.

The 55-year-old Chatham man was charged with assaulting a peace officer and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He was transported to police headquarters and lodged until he was sober.

He was released with conditions and a future court date of December 04, 2023. sober.
