Fundraiser launched for Chatham man, who took a serious fall while on vacation

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched for Michael Whitty, after he took a serious fall while on vacation down south.

Mandy Whitty, Michael’s daughter, said the fundraiser was created to help cover her dads medical bills outside the country.

“He went on a cruise in the Bahamas and at the port he was on a cliff and fell off the edge,” Mandy Whitty wrote on the GoFundMe page, which was created on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

“He has very serious injuries and internal bleeding and broken bones, pools of blood in the lungs, chest tubes in etc. all while he’s been stuck on the ship until a medical helicopter is safe to take him. He is being air lifted back to Miami for medical help. He will require lots of surgery etc. before he is safe to come back to Canada.”

Mandy added: “We have no money to pay for his bills in the states or money for flights and place to stay for family in Miami. If you can help please do or at least share this out.”

In an update posted on Saturday, January 13, 2024, Mandy said her dad has had one surgery so far and requires more.

“They also have to reattach his nerve endings to ribs,” she added.

Approximately $3,000 of their $20,000 goal has been raised to date.
