A community presentation is set for Saturday, February 10, 2024 in regards to a proposed waste facility expansion near Dresden.
“The Municipality understands and appreciates the concerns that have been raised from some community members regarding a proposed expansion to an existing waste facility located at 29831 Irish School Road, just north of Dresden,” Municipal officials said in a media release.
“The Municipality just received notice from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks that an application has been submitted for an amendment to an existing provincial environmental approval for this facility, which is currently owned and operated by York1 Environmental Waste Solutions Ltd. The property does hold existing provincial approvals for some waste processing and landfilling activities at the site.”
Municipal officials say they are taking this matter very seriously.
“Given that the notice was just received, administration is currently gathering additional information and will be seeking advice from technical experts regarding the application,” Municipal officials added.
“The Municipality will provide further updates as new information becomes available. We understand there is a community presentation being hosted by York1 Environmental Waste Solutions Ltd. taking place for immediate neighbours at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 10 at Christ Church in Dresden (350 St. George St. South).”
More details about the application are posted on the Province’s website, here: https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-8205
Anyone can submit online comments directly to the Province through this website by March 16, 2024.
In letter sent to neighbours, York1 says their proposal is for a regenerative recycling facility.
“This innovative facility will target the recovery and beneficial re-use of construction debris that would have otherwise gone to landfills, helping the environment and conserving valuable materials,” York1 said in the letter.
North Kent Councillor Jamie McGrail said she has had a large amount of emails in regards to the proposal.
“York 1 has not made any formal requests to the Municipality,” McGrail posted on Facebook.
“Council has not made any decisions regarding this. Second, York1 has been dealing with the province. The province has a site where you can go and comment on this project. I encourage all to go and take a moment to read, understand and then add your comments.”
McGrail added: “I understand right now without the Municipality thoroughly reading and examining the request, this is an amendment to the current site. As soon as I have an official comment/report from the Municipality, I will share with all. These are trying times. Please take the time to read. I do not have the answers at this time and will only engage respectful conversation.”
We’ll provide more details when they become available.
