The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) issued a watershed conditions statement and flood outlook on Friday, March 8, 2024, as 20-40 mm of rain is excepted, along with saturated soils, increased runoff, elevated water levels, and the potential for minor flooding.
“Environment Canada is tracking a low-pressure system that will enter the region today, bringing 20-40 mm of rain beginning Friday evening through Saturday,” SCRCA officials stated.
“Rainfall amounts may vary depending on location. Significant flooding is not expected at this time but water levels are expected to rise in local creeks and streams. Soils are anticipated to become saturated from the rain and could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues. Rising water levels may spill into natural floodplain areas, parks and fields.”
SCRCA officials added: “With students being off for March Break, parents and guardians are reminded to keep children and pets away from watercourses. Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water.”
The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely, SCRCA officials added.
