Former WDSS swimmer Shona Branton named Western Mustangs 2023-2024 Female Athlete of the Year

Former Wallaceburg District Secondary School swimmer Shona Branton has been named this year’s Western Mustangs winner of 2023-2024 Female Athlete of the Year.

Western officials say Athlete of the Year is presented annually to a Western Mustangs male and female student athlete who have achieved outstanding success representing Western at the provincial or national level in the season.

“Shona continues her rapid progression both nationally and on the international stage,” stated Paul Midgley, Head Coach for Mustangs Swimming.

“There is much more to see from her and Olympic trials are right around the corner. Shona comes prepared to every practice and gives 100% to each and every work out. Shona has broken a barrier (and U SPORTS Canada and Western Mustangs records) with her swimming and continues to push herself every practice and at every competition.”

Branton started swimming at the age of five on the Wallaceburg Marlins Swim Team.

After much success with the Marlins, Branton transferred to the Sarnia Rapids Swim Team at age 12.

She was then a member of the WDSS Swim team starting in Grade 9.

After a successful high school career, she holds many meet records, earned medals at OFSAA and was nationally ranked in the breast stroke.
