Lambton OPP officials say: As part of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) commitment to the Provincial Traffic Safety Program the Lambton OPP will be engaged in an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Awareness Week Initiative.
The 2024 All Terrain Vehicle Safety Awareness Week commenced at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, May 31 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2024.
As a general overview in the Province of Ontario, ATV’s must be:
– Registered,
– display a licence plate and
– insured under a motor vehicle liability policy.
When operating an ATV:
– always ride according to the trail, road and weather conditions,
– use extreme caution when turning, crossing, climbing and descending hills,
– drive sober – it’s illegal to drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs,
– ride in designated areas only,
– respect the environment and keep noise levels low,
– Review Ontario Regulation 316/03 for a complete list of provincial highways where on-road ORVs are permitted as well as prohibited and
– If there is no bylaw for that municipality, check whether it is listed under Ontario Regulation 8/03 for municipal roadways you are permitted.
Similar to that of a car or truck, safety surrounding using an ATV is primarily the operator’s responsibility.
