C-K seeking input on Organic Waste Diversion Program Feasibility Study

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is seeking input on the Organic Waste Diversion Program Feasibility Study, consisting of a Curbside Organic Waste Collection (Green Bin Program), Non-curbside Food Waste Diversion Options, and an enhancement to the Leaf and Yard Waste Collection Program.

Municipal officials say the study recommendations aim to comply with the Ontario Food and Organic Waste Policy Statement and reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill by turning organic waste into valuable end-products that support a healthy environment.

“To ensure this study recommendations meet their unique needs, Chatham-Kent residents and business owners are invited to participate in a public survey starting June 17 on the Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent platform,” Municipal officials said in a media release.

“The study recommends a Green Bin Program that will see households and businesses participate in a weekly curbside Green Bin Collection Program,” Municipal officials added.

“The Municipality would provide carts to contain household organic waste at the curb as well as small kitchen containers for use within a household. Upon implementation of this program, garbage collection will be moved to a bi-weekly collection service (i.e. every other week). The proposed acceptable materials include food waste, oil, grease, coffee grounds, non-recyclable paper soiled with food, and pet food. More details about the proposed program are available on the survey page.”

Community feedback is crucial in shaping the Organic Waste Diversion Program Feasibility Study to ensure it meets the community’s needs, Municipal officials added.

Specifications will be finalized based on feedback received through this survey. Detailed study recommendations will be presented to Council for review and approval in early 2025.
