In 1987, the governments of Canada and the United States identified the St. Clair River as an Area of Concern (AOC) due to urban and industrial development. For over 30 years, the local community, First Nation communities, government, and industry have been working together to improve the water quality and aquatic habitat of the St. Clair River and remove if from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern.
