With the start of a new school year upon us, the Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists, parents, and students to prioritize safety on our roads and in school zones.
The Lambton County OPP is asking for the community’s cooperation during this busy time of year.
Motorists: Slow down and be vigilant while driving in school zones. Be mindful of children walking or riding their bicycles to and from school. When you see amber flashing lights on a school bus, you should slow down and be prepared to stop. You MUST stop for school buses when the red lights are flashing and when the stop arm is extended. Not only is passing a stopped school bus illegal and dangerous, but it could also result in a $400-$2000 fine and six demerit points.
Parents and Students: Encourage children to avoid distractions while walking. Take the time to remind them of bus safety such as; staying seated while the bus is in motion, waiting for the bus to stop before getting on or off, and to cross the street when it safe. If your child is riding a bicycle to school, ensure they are wearing a helmet and that they follow the rules of the road. And remember, it is important to look both ways before crossing the street, use a crosswalk, and obey crossing guards.
“(This) week kids return to school,” stated Inspector Chris Avery, Lambton County Detachment Commander, in a media release.
“Please be aware of the big yellow school buses with the flashing lights. Be mindful to stop when the lights are flashing. This will protect our children who are our future and our most precious commodity.”
The Lambton County OPP will be conducting increased patrols in school zones and along bus routes.
Back to school season is an exciting time, but it is also a time where we all need to do our part to make it a safe school year for everyone, OPP officials added.
