From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
Have you ever caught yourself saying, “If only so-and-so wasn’t in my life, I could be doing so much better!”
This could be a sibling you don’t get along with, or a contentious co-worker, or possibly an unreasonable employer.
You are convinced that such people are holding you back from achieving more, but with them standing in the way you can’t make progress.
I read a quote recently from someone who runs marathons and does digital creating on the internet.
Here is what I read: “Your competition isn’t other people. Your competition is your procrastination. Your competition is your negative thoughts. Your competition is your comfort zone. Compete against that – this is how we grow.”
Taking responsibility for our own actions, or lack of them, is the first step towards getting better.
My Slovenian grandmother, my mom’s mom, came to Canada in the early 1930’s with her husband.
He died in a freak factory accident three years later leaving her with three tiny children and no command of the English language.
She faced trials at every turn, but she also had a strong faith and a heart of dogged determination to keep going, despite the odds.
Instead of blaming God and others for her desperate situation she chose to ignore negative thoughts, inconvenience, and hard financial times and just keep going.
With God’s help she knew she could find a way.
The apostle Paul put it this way in Philippians 3:13: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.”
So, what’s your competition today?
With God’s help you can overcome!
