Police noticing an increase in unlocked vehicles being a target in property crimes

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: This is a reminder to protect your vehicles from being the next target.

We have noticed an increase in unlocked vehicles being a target in property crimes; this includes both the theft of the vehicles themselves and unlocked cars that are conveniently accessible for thieves to steal belongings from within.

A simple habit to adapt in order to protect yourself and your property is the “9PM Routine”

Criminals look for easy opportunities.

The “9PM Routine” may help prevent crimes of opportunity.

Every night at 9 p.m. we encourage you to ensure the following checklist is complete:

– Remove valuables and garage door opener from vehicles

– Lock vehicles

– Close overhead garage door

– Lock door between garage and house

– Close and lock all external doors

– Ensure windows are closed and locked

– Turn on an exterior light

Together we can help reduce crime in your neighbourhood and our community as whole.
