Pride walkways were vandalized overnight on Monday in the Town of Petrolia.
Petrolia officials said “it is with great disappointment” that they advised the public of some overnight vandalism, where two town crosswalks that are a public symbol of acceptance, inclusion and community were vandalized overnight in Petrolia.
Not only is this unacceptable, but it is also unwelcome in the community as they strive to welcome all people to find a place of belonging, town officials say.
“This will not be tolerated,” stated Mayor Brad Loosley.
“Hate has no home in Petrolia. As we focus on inclusivity and on acceptance of all, we will not allow this discriminatory visual to deter the Town from welcoming diversity and fostering equality. As soon as possible, the crosswalks will be re-painted as a testament to our belief in our community and to acceptance and inclusion.”
The local public school board says they stand with the town.
“The Lambton Kent District School Board stands with the Town of Petrolia to condemn the vandalism of the three Pride walkways, two of which are connected with two of our schools,” school board officials stated.
“Such acts of hate will be called out as such. We will be working with the town in the clean-up, restoration and supporting our community members. We will always work towards ensuring all students and staff are safe and feel a sense of belonging in our schools. Now is the time to move our advocacy to allyship and stand up against all forms of hate.”
Volunteers were out to clean up the damage on Monday morning.
“This is what community looks like,” town officials said on social media.
The Ontario Provincial Police have been notified, and the Town of Petrolia asks that anyone with information to please contact them at the non-emergency number 1-888-310-1122.
