Volunteers needed for Paw Paw Woods Ecological Restoration Project in Wallaceburg

The Sydenham Field Naturalists (SFN) are making progress on the Paw Paw Woods Ecological Restoration Project, aimed at removing invasive species and reintroducing native plants to support local biodiversity.

Volunteers are needed to assist with the removal of invasive species, particularly Multi-Flora Rose, on October 19 and October 26. The October 19 session will be led by Dave Smith, and the October 26 session by Ismay Earl. Both sessions will begin at 10 a.m., with refreshments and lunch provided.

The project is divided into three key phases:

Invasive Species Removal (September–October 2024): Volunteers will help remove invasive plants, including Multi-Flora Rose, which have spread from landscaped areas and are threatening local ecosystems.

Native Planting (October–November 2024): After the invasive species are removed, volunteers will plant native trees and shrubs to restore the habitat.

Trail Repairs (Spring 2025): In the final phase, trails will be repaired to improve access for visitors and create a welcoming environment for both people and wildlife.

The project is supported by the Invasive Species Centre, which is funding the removal of invasive plants, and Enbridge, whose employee program is funding the native plantings.

The restoration is crucial for preserving local biodiversity. Invasive species outcompete native plants and reduce habitat for wildlife. Volunteers will play a direct role in restoring this important ecosystem.
