OPP release video footage after rocks were thrown at vehicles in Markam

Police have released video footage related to the continued investigation into incidents of rocks being thrown at vehicles in Markham.

Since September 20, 2024, the Aurora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has received 11 reports of rocks being intentionally thrown at vehicles along Highway 48 in Markham. The York Regional Police (YRP) has also identified nine reports of rocks being deliberately thrown at vehicles in their jurisdiction.

One of the incidents led to a severe collision, leaving two individuals with life-threatening injuries. One victim has since been discharged and one victim remains in hospital.

Based on several reports, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and its occupants may be involved. The OPP is asking anyone who can identify the vehicle and its passengers to contact police.

A media kit with dashcam footage of the collision, video of investigators speaking about the case, a map of the reported instances and photos is available at opp.ca/news/#/viewmediakit/6733621de5770.

The Aurora OPP is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), in cooperation with YRP.

“These innocent victims were simply travelling on our roadways, which should be safe for everyone,” stated Detective Inspector Sean Chatland, CIB, in a media release.

“It’s shocking that such dangerous acts are occurring in our community. We’re determined to put a stop to it and to relentlessly pursue whoever is responsible. We want to ensure that no other family member or loved one has to endure such a traumatic experience.”
