On Monday, December 16, 2024, Ursuline College Chatham (UCC) will host Ontario’s Minister of Education Jill Dunlop for a visit and tour focused on highlighting UCC’s skilled trades educational programs.
The visit will emphasize the importance of skilled trades education and the opportunities it provides students to develop hands-on skills for future careers, school board officials say.
The tour will include stops in various classrooms specializing in construction technology, manufacturing technology, and hairstyling and aesthetics.
Students will showcase their learning through projects in carpentry, welding, hairstyling, and spa treatments.
These programs equip students with practical skills, foster awareness of societal and environmental responsibilities, and prepare them for diverse career paths.
“We are excited to welcome Minister Dunlop to UCC and highlight the exceptional work in our skilled trades programs,” says Scott Johnson, Director of Education, in a media release.
“These opportunities allow students to build technical skills, explore career pathways, and connect their learning to meaningful futures.”
“Skilled trades education is a key pillar in Ontario’s efforts to build a strong and resilient workforce. I look forward to seeing firsthand how these programs are providing students with the hands-on experience and technical skills they need to shape their futures, while contributing to our province’s economy,” says Jill Dunlop, Minister of Education, in a media release.
“Our government is dedicated to expanding access to these pathways and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.”
Local leaders, including Darrin Canniff, Mayor of Chatham-Kent, and Trevor Jones, MPP for Chatham-Kent–Leamington, will also participate, reflecting the community’s shared commitment to advancing skilled trades education, school board officials added.
