OPP: Reported gunfire on Walpole Island leads to weapons & drug charges

OPP officials allege: Two people are facing charges following an incident on Walpole Island First Nation.

The investigation began on December 19, 2024, at approximately 5 p.m., when members of Walpole Island First Nation Police (WIFNP) and the Lambton Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of gunfire during an altercation at an address on River Road.

Police took two individuals into custody without incident.

There were no injuries.

A 29-year-old Walpole Island First Nation resident is charged with the following offences:

– Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

A 35-year-old Walpole Island First Nation resident is charged with the following offences:

– Careless Use of a Firearm -Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code

– Reckless Discharge of a Firearm – Section 244.2(1)(b) of the Criminal Code

– Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

– Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm – Section 91(1) of the Criminal Code

Both individuals remain in custody and will appear in bail court at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia on December 24, 2024.
