CCTV cameras assist police with multiple investigations across Chatham-Kent

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: On the evening of January 22, 2025, Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to a robbery in Tilbury, where it was believed the suspect had fled the scene in a vehicle.

Despite an extensive search of the immediate area, investigators were unable to locate either the suspect or the vehicle.

Turning to the local CCTV system, investigators identified that the vehicle had been captured on a camera in Chatham.

Acting quickly on this lead, an alert Chatham-Kent Police Officer located the vehicle, and the suspects were arrested without incident, bringing a swift resolution to a serious crime.

A few hours later, the Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to a call for service in Chatham involving an elderly person who had not returned home from a scheduled appointment.

There were concerns for the health of the missing person, considering the extreme cold temperatures.

Several attempts to locate the person and their vehicle were conducted by members of frontline patrol with little success.

Investigators revisited the CCTV system and discovered that the vehicle in question had recently been spotted several kilometres away, in the Dresden area.

Officers quickly converged on the area and found the vehicle, low on fuel and the driver disoriented.

Thanks to the timely use of the CCTV system, the individual was located before any harm could occur.

The person was safely returned to their family, and additional support was provided to everyone involved.

Investigators handling both calls for service were significantly aided by the CCTV system deployed across various communities in Chatham-Kent.

Technology played a critical role in bringing about peaceful and successful resolutions to both incidents.

These cases serve as prime examples of how community and officers’ safety is being enhanced through innovative collaboration.
