The candidate list is quickly taking shape in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex ahead of the February 27, 2025 Ontario Election.
Alvinston resident Kathryn Shailer has won the nomination to be the Ontario NDP candidate in the upcoming provincial election.
Shailer, a lifelong educator with a passion for social justice issues and the arts, has more than 20 years experience as a senior administrator at postsecondary institutions across Canada under her belt and a further 20 years of teaching.
“I am truly honoured to be your Ontario NDP candidate,” Shailer stated in a media release.
“People in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex deserve a government that is on their side and invests in affordable housing, healthcare and education. I look forward to serving the community with everything I have and raising your concerns at Queen’s Park under the leadership of Marit Stiles.”
The Ontario PC Party announced back in December that current MPP Steve Pinsonneault was acclaimed as the party’s candidate in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex for the election.
Since being elected MPP, Steve Pinsonneault has worked to deliver real results for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, Ontario PC Party officials say.
A long-time Chatham-Kent Councillor representing East Kent, Pinsonneault was elected during a by-election back in the fall.
“Representing Lambton-Kent-Middlesex is an honor and a responsibility I take to heart,” said Pinsonneault, in a media release.
“Whether it’s expanding health-care services, improving rural broadband, or training workers for the jobs of the future, I’m dedicated to making sure our communities thrive. There’s still much to do, and I’m ready to keep working alongside the people of this great region to build a stronger, more prosperous Ontario.”
Pinsonneault replaced longtime MPP Monte McNaughton, who resigned earlier this year.
Cathy Burghardt-Jesson, the third-term Mayor of Lucan Biddulph and three-term Warden of Middlesex County, is the Ontario Liberal candidate for Lambton—Kent—Middlesex.
“I’m honored to accept the nomination as the Liberal candidate for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex,” Burghardt-Jesson said, in a media release.
“Under the current government, everyday Ontarians, especially in rural areas, are being ignored, and their issues are overlooked. I will be a strong voice for those unheard at Queen’s Park. I’ve built relationships across the province and proven my commitment to open dialogue and consensus.”
Burghardt-Jesson added: “My priority will be representing the concerns and needs of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex residents, advocating for rural communities and supporting our vital agricultural sector, so we can build a province where everyone feels represented.”
Pinsonneault topped both Burghardt-Jesson and Shailer at the polls during the by-election in the fall.
Premier Doug Ford confirmed on Tuesday that the Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, has accepted the premier’s advice to sign a proclamation dissolving the 43rd Parliament of the Province of Ontario, effective as of 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
Pursuant to the provisions of the Election Act, the Lieutenant Governor also called for the issuance of writs for the general election to be issued January 29, 2025, and named February 27, 2025, as the date of Ontario’s next general election, Provincial officials said in a media release.
Premier Ford confirmed last week that the election call was coming.
“We need a mandate from the people to fight against Donald Trump’s tariffs, the attack he’s coming against our families, our businesses, our communities,” Ford said during a press conference in Brampton on Friday.
“With a strong mandate, we will be able to fight with Donald Trump to make sure we stop the tariffs and make sure that we give certainty to the people of Ontario. It may take investing tens of billions of dollars. There’s no different than during the pandemic.”
The Premier added: “We’ll make sure we secure people’s livelihoods and I will do whatever it takes to protect the people of Ontario, in turn, because we’re the engine of Canada, protecting all Canadians, we will not back down.”
