On his first day in office, and his first action as Prime Minister, Mark Carney cancelled the consumer carbon tax in Canada.
“The world is shifting, and Canada needs to be ready,” the Prime Minister said on X.
“The consumer carbon tax was too divisive when we should be pulling together. That’s why I took action to cancel it on day one.”
When addressing the issue, Carney said the move doesn’t mean the fight against climate change is over.
The Prime Minister said his team is focused on making big polluters pay and introducing new incentives for families to access heat pumps and other home energy retrofits that will save families money on their energy bills, while cutting their carbon footprint.
Carney’s order states the tax will stop on April 1, 2025 and the April Canada Carbon Rebate will still be issued.
