The Walpole Island Fire Department reported on Wednesday morning, March 19, 2025 that they were on scene responding to a marsh fire located on the north side of Squirrel Island.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and will be conducting a controlled burn as part of our response efforts,” Walpole fire officials say.
“Further updates will be provided as necessary.”
The department has been dealing with several marsh fires in the past week.
On March 13, 2025, Walpole Island Fire Department officials said they responded to three separate marsh fires.
“The first fire was quickly extinguished. The second fire was also brought under control with minimal effort. The third fire, however, escalated into a large-scale marsh fire that was beyond our immediate control. To mitigate the threat to nearby hydro poles, and power lines, we conducted a successful backburn operation, effectively containing the fire, and preventing further damage,” fire officials said.
Two more fires were responded to on March 14, 2025.
“The Walpole Island Fire Department had a demanding day, responding to two separate marsh fires. One fire was alarmingly close to an occupied structure, while the other was progressively approaching a nearby building. In between these incidents, we successfully conducted a controlled burn for a concerned community member. Fortunately, both marsh fires were extinguished without causing any property damage, and the controlled burn was executed flawlessly,” Walpole fire officials say.
