Elections Canada: Voters have several options to cast their ballot

With the federal general election now underway, Elections Canada is encouraging voters to plan ahead and choose the voting method that best suits them.

Electors have several options to cast their ballot. They can vote in person on election day, Monday, April 28, at their assigned polling station. Advance voting is also available on April 18, 19, 20, and 21 at designated polling locations.

For those who wish to vote early, Elections Canada offices across the country will be open for in-person voting until Tuesday, April 22, at 6 p.m. Alternatively, electors can opt to vote by mail, but they must apply for a special ballot by April 22 at 6 p.m. Completed mail-in ballots must be returned to Elections Canada before polls close on election day.

Elections Canada advises anyone voting by mail to allow enough time to receive their voting kit and return their completed ballot by the deadline specified in their kit. Other voting options include Vote on Campus offices and voting services at long-term care facilities. A full list of voting methods is available on elections.ca.

Voters do not need to wait for their voter information card to determine where to vote. By entering their postal code at elections.ca, they can find details about their local Elections Canada office and assigned polling station.

Electors who require special assistance or face barriers to registering and voting are encouraged to contact their local Elections Canada office for support. To vote, all electors must provide proof of identity and address. A list of accepted identification is available on elections.ca. Some ID types accepted in provincial or municipal elections may not meet federal requirements.

Different voting and identification rules apply to incarcerated electors and Canadian citizens living abroad.

Elections Canada is an independent, non-partisan agency that reports directly to Parliament.
