TBT: Cable drawn ferry from the Wallaceburg area to Walpole Island

In recognition of Wallaceburg’s 150th anniversary this year, the Wallaceburg & District Museum has launched a new feature on social media: ‘150 Facts, for 150 Years’.

Here is one of their recent posts:

“For much of our history, there has not been land access to Walpole Island.

In fact, it was not until 1968 that the bridge to Walpole Island was first built.

Before this, any travel to the island had to and from be done via the waterways.

There was a ferry available to those wishing to travel from Wallaceburg to Walpole Island and vice versa.

The earliest versions of this ferry was cable drawn – meaning that it took two men pulling two ropes to get the ferry across the river.

That looks like hard work!”
