Sarnia Police Service officials allege: The Sarnia Police Service is currently investigating several reports of election signs being stolen, throughout the city in the lead-up to the upcoming federal election.
The public are reminded that tampering with election signage is not only disrespectful to the democratic process, but may also constitute one or more criminal or provincial offences.
Individuals found to be involved in the theft, damage, or unauthorized removal of election signs could be charged with the following offences:
– Theft under $5,000 (Section 322, Criminal Code of Canada)
– Mischief under $5,000 (Section 430, Criminal Code of Canada)
– Interfering with election materials (Canada Elections Act)
– Trespassing (Trespass to Property Act)
The Sarnia Police Service is asking residents to respect all posted election materials, regardless of political affiliation.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity involving election signs is encouraged to report it immediately to police by calling 519-344-8861, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
