Walpole Island Fire Department: ‘To those responsible for setting fires, please stop’

The Walpole Island Fire Department is urgently asking the community for their cooperation.

“If you witness anyone deliberately setting fires, please do not intervene directly — safely take photos if possible and report the incident immediately to the appropriate authorities,” Walpole Island Fire Department officials stated on Facebook.

“Our dedicated volunteer firefighters have been working tirelessly since Thursday night, and are in need of a break. Your vigilance and support can help reduce unnecessary strain on our team, and ensure community safety.”

Fire department officials added: “To those responsible for setting fires: Please STOP. This is not the time of year for open burning. These actions are destroying vital nesting grounds, and natural habitats that wildlife depend on —especially during this sensitive season when many animals are caring for their young. Let’s work together to protect our land, our wildlife, and each other. Thank you for your continued support.”

The Walpole department have been battling multiple marsh fires all weekend and the past several weeks.
