From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brain Horrobin
One of the lessons my parents instilled in me in my growing up years was to be resourceful and diligent and to avoid being lazy.
My brothers and I were clearly taught that laziness was a thing to be loathed, and it would not reap success in life.
Look at what King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 10:18: “If a man is lazy, the rafters sag; if his hands are idle, the house leaks.”
We’ve all driven past houses in our community that fit this woeful description.
I realize that poverty also contributes to these traits, but that cannot be blamed for everything.
This same Solomon made an interesting observation in Proverbs 24:30-34.
He says, “I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense. I saw that it was overgrown with nettles. It was covered with weeds and its walls were broken down. Then, as I looked and thought about it, I learned this lesson: A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.”
I know of people who have very limited means, yet they keep a tidy home and property.
They don’t use their lack of finances as an excuse to be lazy and disregard the condition of their property.
If you are someone who struggles in this area it might be helpful to find a friend who will keep you accountable.
You can set attainable goals for each other and then agree to each check on the other’s progress.
Athletes do this with training schedules all the time, and it works.
Spiritual goals like being regular to church and prayer and Bible reading also help keep the rafters of your spiritual house from sagging.
Decide today that you will loathe laziness!
