Ontario offers free fishing for Father’s Day weekend

The Ontario government is inviting Canadian residents to enjoy free recreational fishing across the province on June 14 and 15 in celebration of Father’s Day weekend.

“This Father’s Day weekend, take the opportunity to head outdoors, cast a line and create lasting memories with the people who matter most,” said Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources.

“Whether it’s your first time fishing or a time-honoured family tradition, this is a great way to explore Ontario’s beautiful lakes and rivers while supporting the local communities, jobs and businesses that depend on our province’s diverse fishing opportunities.”

The province said the initiative aims to encourage participation in the sport while highlighting the economic benefits of recreational fishing.

More than one million licensed anglers spend an estimated $1.75-billion annually on recreational fishing in Ontario, contributing to tourism and job creation in many regions.

While licences are not required during free fishing events, conservation licence catch and size limits, sanctuaries, and all other fishing regulations remain in effect.

This is the third of four annual free fishing opportunities offered in 2025. The next event will be Family Fishing Week, taking place June 28 to July 6.

Canadian residents fishing without a licence during free fishing periods must carry government-issued ID that includes their name and date of birth. Outside of these designated periods, most individuals aged 18 to 64 must hold an Outdoors Card and a valid fishing licence.

Veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members living in Ontario can fish for free year-round.

Fishing licences can be purchased online at huntandfishontario.com, or in person at participating ServiceOntario or authorized licence issuer locations.
