Sarnia Police launch dedicated downtown ‘Village Constable’ pilot project

The Sarnia Police Service has officially launched a new summer pilot project aimed at enhancing safety and visibility in the city’s core: the Downtown Village Constable initiative.

Constable Jamie Fraser has been named to the role, serving as a consistent and approachable presence throughout downtown Sarnia, including Front Street, Christina Street, and the Mitton Village area. Fraser will be responsible for responding to calls for service in the district, while also engaging directly with business owners, residents, and community partners to address concerns and improve quality of life downtown.

“This project is about building stronger community connections,” said SPS officials in a release. “It will allow for a more visible police presence and support downtown businesses through proactive and responsive engagement.”

Fraser, a familiar face to many in Sarnia, brings a unique background to the role. A graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, he played for the Sarnia Sting from 2004 to 2006 before pursuing a professional hockey career that took him across the U.S. and Europe. He joined the Sarnia Police Service in December 2023 and has since worked on front-line patrol.

“His local roots, approachable demeanor, and passion for community policing make him a strong fit for this position,” the release said.

The pilot continues the momentum of the SPS downtown patrol program, which has included officers on foot and bicycle actively engaging with the public, addressing disorderly conduct, investigating incidents, and taking part in community events.

The move is being welcomed by community stakeholders.

“The Sarnia Lambton Chamber of Commerce is pleased to see the launch of the Downtown Village Constable initiative,” said Carrie McEachran, CEO of the SLCC. “This program not only enhances safety and security in our downtown area but also fosters a welcoming environment for both businesses and visitors.”

Local merchants are also optimistic.

“When we first heard that the SPS Downtown Patrol will be continuing this year, we were thrilled,” said Mia Clarke, co-chair of The Downtown Collective. “After a year of ups and downs, everyone we’ve told in the collective was really happy to get some good news. We’re hopeful this is the first of many steps toward helping us improve some of the day-to-day challenges we face as business owners.”

The Downtown Collective is a growing group of nearly 50 local businesses and property owners united to improve communication with the city, encourage growth, and address safety and beautification efforts.

The Downtown Village Constable pilot will run through the summer months, with ongoing community feedback playing a key role in its evaluation.
