Sombra Museum to dedicate restored Abraham Smith log cabin at annual Blueberry Social July 5

The Abraham Smith Lodge cabin, one of the oldest remaining structures in Lambton County, stands as a lasting testament to the early European settlers of Sombra and Sombra Township, now part of South St. Clair Township.

Originally constructed in the early 1820s, the historic log cabin was donated to the Sombra Museum in 1993 and has since been a centerpiece of local heritage preservation.

In 2023, an ambitious restoration project was launched to shield the cabin from further weather damage and to create an accessible space designed for both educational and recreational use on the museum grounds.

This initiative underscores the community’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding its cultural landmarks and ensuring they remain relevant and welcoming for future generations.

The public is warmly invited to the Sombra Museum’s annual Blueberry Social, which will also mark the official dedication of the Abraham Smith Log Cabin Pavilion.

The celebration will take place on July 5 between 1 and 4 p.m., with a formal dedication ceremony scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at 3470 St. Clair Parkway, Sombra.

Guests will also have the opportunity to browse a special book sale fundraiser for the Marine Room by the Toronto Marine Historical Society. The sale will feature an array of Great Lakes-themed books available for purchase by cash only.

The museum extends heartfelt thanks to its generous sponsors, the Judith & Norman Alix Foundation and the Moore Community and Recreational Foundation, as well as to the many dignitaries whose ongoing support makes events like this possible.

Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP by 5 p.m. on July 2 via email at sombramuseum@stclairtownship.ca or by calling 519-892-3982.
