Chatham-Kent police opt out of federal firearms buyback program

The Chatham‐Kent Police Service and the Chatham‐Kent Police Service Board have carefully reviewed the Federal Assault‐Style Firearms Compensation Program and determined the service will not participate at this time. Police say the decision reflects a commitment to ensuring organizational resources remain focused on priorities and initiatives that most effectively enhance public safety and support the well-being of Chatham-Kent residents.

The police service acknowledged the federal government’s continued efforts to address gun violence and said it remains committed to maintaining strong, collaborative relationships with federal and provincial partners, as well as with other law enforcement agencies, to combat the circulation of illicit firearms. Police said they will continue working closely with community stakeholders and partner agencies to support a safe, healthy, and thriving Chatham-Kent.

Community members who wish to participate in the federal program, or who are seeking additional information, are encouraged to visit Public Safety Canada at www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/campaigns/firearms-buyback.html.

The federal Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program was introduced as part of the Government of Canada’s broader effort to reduce gun violence in communities. Since May 2020, more than 2,500 makes and models of assault-style firearms have been prohibited nationwide. The program provides eligible businesses and individuals who legally own these firearms with an option to comply with the law by surrendering them in exchange for compensation, subject to available funding.

Participation in the compensation program is voluntary, but compliance with federal firearms legislation is mandatory. Businesses and individual firearm owners are required to safely dispose of or permanently deactivate prohibited assault-style firearms before the amnesty period expires on Oct. 30, 2026. Failure to do so may result in criminal liability for illegal possession.
