Heat warning issued for Chatham-Kent as humidex expected to reach 40 this weekend

Chatham-Kent is under a heat warning as Environment Canada forecasts extreme heat and humidity for the region from Saturday, July 5 through Sunday, July 6. The warning includes Rondeau Park and the surrounding area.

Daytime highs are expected to reach 31 to 33 degrees Celsius, with humidex values hitting 40. Overnight temperatures will remain elevated, ranging from 21 to 25 degrees Celsius, offering little relief from the oppressive heat.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent and Environment Canada are urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves and vulnerable community members, including older adults, young children, those with chronic illnesses, and people living alone.

“During periods of high heat and humidity, your body may not be able to cool properly, which can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke,” the municipality said in a statement. Symptoms can include red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, fainting, or confusion. If these symptoms arise, move to a shaded or air-conditioned area, drink water, and seek medical help if necessary.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Anyone experiencing confusion, unconsciousness, or a high body temperature should be cooled down immediately and 911 should be called.

Officials recommend checking in regularly—either in person or by phone—on those most at risk. Prolonged periods of heat can cause indoor temperatures to rise to dangerous levels, especially in homes without air conditioning. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak sun hours.

Municipal centres and libraries across Chatham-Kent are available as cooling locations during regular operating hours. For information on locations and hours, visit chatham-kent.ca.

Those without shelter or access to basic needs are especially vulnerable during extreme heat events. Residents in need of assistance can call the Homeless Response Line at 519-354-6628, available 24/7.

Environment Canada advises residents to monitor weather alerts and updates, and to report severe weather by emailing ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or using #ONStorm on social media.
