Prolonged heat warning continues for Chatham-Kent

A heat warning remains in effect for Chatham-Kent and Rondeau Park as hot and humid conditions are expected to persist through Thursday, according to Environment Canada.

Daytime highs are forecast to reach between 29 and 32 C, with humidex values pushing temperatures to feel more like 35 to 40 C. Overnight lows of 19 to 23 C are offering little relief, prompting health officials to urge residents to take precautions.

The heat may ease slightly Monday, but hotter and more humid weather is expected to return Tuesday. A change in the weather pattern is likely to bring relief late Thursday.

Health authorities are warning residents to stay hydrated, check on vulnerable individuals such as older adults and those living alone, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours.

Early signs of heat-related illness include nausea, dizziness, headache, dark urine, and fatigue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and may present with confusion, red and hot skin, and loss of consciousness.

Residents are encouraged to wear light, loose-fitting clothing, seek shade, use fans or air conditioning where possible, and make use of local cooling centres or public spaces such as libraries or community centres.

Environment Canada is urging the public to monitor local forecasts and alerts. Severe weather can be reported via email at ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or on X using the hashtag #ONStorm.
