A flood outlook has been issued for the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority watershed following significant rainfall and the potential for more storms overnight.
As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, the SCRCA reported approximately 80 mm of rain in Sarnia and 55 mm in Warwick, with more thunderstorms forecast through Thursday that could bring an additional 30 to 50 mm of rain. Rainfall intensity could peak at 50 mm per hour, with local amounts varying due to the isolated nature of storms.
“High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas,” said Emily De Cloet, interim coordinator of flood forecasting and warning.
Water levels are expected to rise and may enter natural floodplain areas if rainfall totals reach the higher end of predictions. Low-lying roads and areas prone to flooding may be affected, and pooling is possible on saturated or slow-draining ground.
Residents are urged to stay clear of rivers and streams, as slippery banks and swift currents can be dangerous. Children and pets should also be kept away from waterways.
The conservation authority continues to monitor conditions and will update municipalities and media if the situation worsens. Municipal emergency personnel are advised to keep a close watch on local conditions.
The current flood outlook remains in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday, July 17, unless otherwise updated.
