Wallaceburg Councillor Carmen McGregor has put forward a notice of motion calling for enhanced security measures at the L.O. Stonehouse Pedestrian Bridge, following a second incident of vandalism at the structure this year.
The motion notes that the bridge has been vandalized twice in 2026, with the most recent incident causing significant damage to the electrical infrastructure that operates the bridge and rendering its lift span inoperable.
McGregor’s motion states that repeated acts of vandalism against critical municipal infrastructure result in increased costs to taxpayers, disruption to public access, and impacts to community events and services.
The motion asks that administration be directed to prepare a report outlining options, costs, and recommendations for enhanced security at the bridge in response to the repeated vandalism, including but not limited to improved surveillance, access controls, lighting, intrusion detection, physical security enhancements, and any other measures deemed appropriate to protect the infrastructure.
The motion further requests that the report include the estimated costs associated with the recent vandalism, anticipated repair timelines, potential funding sources for both repairs and any recommended security enhancements, any operational impacts resulting from the bridge being out of service, and an estimated timeline for returning the report to council for consideration and direction.
The motion is set to be on the agenda at the August 10, 2026 Council meeting.
